Important Changes for the F1 2023 Season
These are all the important changes you should know for the new Formula 1 season.
- The ground-effect floors are raised 15 mm to prevent teams from running their cars too low and reduce the amount of vertical oscillations, due to race safety concerns after 2022’s season.
- The top of the roll hoop must be rounded to reduce the possibility of digging into the ground. Further it must be able to withstand a 15 g impact with the ground – after Zhou Guanyu’s accident at Silverstone last year where the top of the car got ripped away.
- Increased mirror size to 200 x 60 mm to increase rearward visibility (up from 150 x 50 mm).
- Minimum weight has be lowered by 2 kg, from 798 to 796.
- Teams will only get 11 dry tire-sets, instead of 13 last year.
- There is a 6th dry tire compound this year, starting with the new C0, up to C5. The C0 will now be the hardest compound and C5 will stay the softest compound.
- Pirelli has introduced a 6th tire compound that replaces the current C1, moving the old C1 to C0.
- The FIA has proposed a Revised Qualifying Format (RQF) where drivers can only use the Hard tire for Q1, Medium for Q2 and Soft for Q3. This new format will be trialed at two Grand Prix somewhere in the 2023 season.
- Any driver who receive more than 15 cumulative grip penalties or asked to start at the back of the grid, will start behind any other driver.
- In sprint races, DRS will be enabled after the first lap after the a safety car, instead of after the 2nd. If this is considered a success, this new rule may be added to the normal races in 2024.
- The max cost cap has been lowered from $142.4 million to $135 million.
- Teams will now get $300.000 allowance for each sprint race, but no adjustments for accidental damage.
